BREAK THE CHASE

How to Stop Chasing Gambling Losses

The next bet does not recover the last one. It creates another risk. If you are trying to get back to even, the most useful move is to interrupt the chase before another deposit or wager.

What chasing losses looks like

Chasing can mean increasing stakes after losing, depositing again because you are “almost back,” switching games or bookmakers, borrowing money to continue, or staying longer than planned because leaving while down feels unacceptable.

The loss-chasing cycle

A common pattern is loss → urgency → another bet → more risk → another result → renewed urgency. The cycle can continue even after a win because the target often moves from “get my money back” to “leave with a profit.”

Stop measuring the next bet against the last loss

The previous result does not make the next wager safer. Treat each new bet as a separate decision involving new money. Ask: “Would I make this bet if I had not just lost?”

Add friction before another deposit

Close the account or app, use available blocking or self-exclusion tools, remove saved payment methods where possible, and avoid moving money while you are trying to recover a loss. Friction creates time for the urge to change.

What if you win the money back?

Getting back to even does not automatically switch off the urge to continue. If your stopping point keeps moving after wins, read Why Can’t I Stop Gambling Even When I Win?.

Make a rule for the next urge

Write one action you will take before any future deposit after a loss: wait 20 minutes, leave the room, contact someone, or open your emergency plan. Make the action specific enough to use under pressure.

If you want to see what happens when the next deposit never happens, use the Gambling Savings Calculator to put the next week, month and year into numbers.

Separate the loss from the next decision

If money pressure is driving the urge, use Gambling Debt and Money Recovery rather than treating another bet as a repayment plan.

Important: Chasing can escalate quickly when losses involve borrowed money, essential expenses or debt. If that is happening, prioritize stopping further gambling and seek appropriate financial and specialist support.
