If Drinking Makes You Want to Gamble, Do This First
If alcohol makes gambling harder to resist, focus on the next safe decision tonight—not on solving everything at once.
1. Do not make gambling decisions while impaired
Alcohol can reduce inhibition and make it harder to pause before an impulsive decision. If you have been drinking, make tonight’s rule simple: no deposits, no new gambling accounts and no decisions about “winning it back.”
2. Protect access to money
Move essential money away from the account or payment method you normally use to gamble where practical. Remove stored payment shortcuts and avoid carrying the gambling decision into another app or device.
3. Remove gambling access before the urge grows
Log out, close the gambling app or site and put the device somewhere less accessible. If you need a device-level barrier, compare Gamban, BetBlocker and GamBlock. If late-night access is part of the pattern too, see how to stop gambling at night.
4. Tell the person you are with
A short sentence is enough: “Drinking makes me want to gamble, so I need help staying away from it tonight.” Making the urge visible can remove some of the secrecy that lets it grow.
5. Plan differently before the next night out
Before drinking next time, decide what money you will carry, which devices or apps you will avoid, and who knows gambling is a trigger. Use the Urges hub to plan for the pattern rather than relying on willpower in the moment.
